Improving marital and partner relationships
Do you want to improve your relationship? Is something missing but you are not sure what to change or how to change it?
This course is for married or cohabiting couples who would like to learn more about specific qualities of enduring and happy relationships, and what can be done to strengthen these qualities in their own relationship.
What you will learn
In this course, you will learn:
- The specific qualities of stable and happy marital relationships
- Greater awareness of each person's personal and mutual contributions to relationship difficulties
- An empirically-based understanding of the specific factors that contribute to marital breakdown and the antidotes for these destructive forces
- A greater awareness of each person's needs and wants in the relationship and how to make requests for these needs to be met
- An understanding of the various styles of handling conflict
Is this course for you?
You should consider seeking professional help (individual, group, or couples counselling) rather than take this course, if any of the following are present in your relationship:
- Severe and chronic marital discord
- Physical violence
- Emotional abuse (i.e. degradation, social isolation)
- Discovery or recovery from an affair is the central issue
- The primary issue impacting the relationship is substance abuse, gambling, or other compulsive behaviors
Note: This course may be used by couples who are participating in marital counselling as an adjunct to therapy.
Can one partner take this course?
Yes. While relationship problems are typically co-created by both partners, and are therefore best treated by both partners working together, there is much that one partner can do separately to strengthen the relationship. The ideal scenario, however, is for both partners to complete the course concurrently.
